Samantha ("Sam") Davis (captured here in 1993, second row at the centre, holding the twiggy "M") used to drive the Gaggia in our Darlinghurst Store Café.

Sam was (probably still is) a bower bird ... a collector of things: ornaments, old cardigans, bottle tops, coloured bits of paper ... all manner of eclectica.

This pleasing image was lifted from a mysterious sign that we spotted one day above her bedroom door. The sign had travelled with Sam from home to home, suburb to suburb, usually close to the beach in Sydney's East. Inevitable wear and tear had taken its toll, but the sign was hanging together nicely with the assistance of Blu-tack (another story there, Note to Self: explain Blu-tack to American CustOMERs). All was well until one day, one half (the "IAL") fell into a hot toaster and suffered irreparable damage.

Sam retains "SPEC" and the remains of "IAL" at her shared home in Bermagui NSW.

As to the sign's origins ... Sam thinks that it was salvaged from "some place somewhere between Sydney and Young on the Hay Plains."
